Fishing at Lake Lorraine

Classes offered through Game, Fish & Parks are free but you must register in order to participate. Registration takes place through The Outdoor Campus website. All participants must also sign waivers.

Lake Lorraine developers Friessen Development, Inc., always pictured activities that allowed for quiet enjoyment of the water as part of their master vision for the lifestyle center. Because the lake is privately-owned, no public activities are allowed on the water, including swimming and fishing.

A partnership with the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, however, is creating opportunities for the public to learn more about fishing in an urban environment. Beginning in 2021, The Outdoor Campus staff and volunteers began pop-up fishing activities and classes at Lake Lorraine. These events enable GFP staff to see what programs work best at Lake Lorraine and to gauge interest from the public. The end goal is to establish regular fishing activities at the development.

And yes, there are fish in the lake! When Lake Lorraine founder Warren Friessen was developing the lake, he envisioned having a lake where he could fish. Once he excavated the materials and the lake filled with water from the Skunk Creek aquifer, Friessen stocked the lake with fish. Known species in the water include Northern Pike, Large Mouth Bass, Crappie, Perch and Blue Gill.
