See Anchorman at the All-American Drive-In June 26-28
A pop-up drive-in movie experience is coming to Lake Lorraine June 26-28. Dubbed the “All-American Drive-In,” this event is bringing the classic movie watching experience to the westside lifestyle center. Two showings of the movie Anchorman (PG-13) will take place each of the evenings at 9 p.m. and 11:15 p.m.
The movie will be shown on the east side of the lake in the parking lot of the building south of Hobby Lobby — which also serves as the site of the weekly Farmers Market. Sound will be transmitted to each car via an FM transmitter and concessions can be delivered to your car. The Big Orange Food Truck is providing food for sale, Karma’s Korn (a Lake Lorraine Farmers Market vendor) will have a variety of kettle corn options and lemonade for purchase, and traditional movie concessions will also be available for purchase.
Tickets can only be purchased onsite the night of the event. The cost is $10 ages 12 and up, $5 ages 6-11 and free for anyone under 5. Approximately 70 cars can attend each viewing. Payments can be made using cash or credit.
The All-American Drive-In is the brainchild of Drew Peterson, who approached Lake Lorraine developers about bringing this experience to Sioux Falls.
“It will provide audiences with a viewing experience that combines food truck delicacies and a vintage drive-in movie on our 4K digital projectors,” Peterson said.
Movie theaters across America have been empty for nearly three months in accordance with coronavirus restrictions. Drive-in movie theaters, an entertainment staple from the late 1950s to the early ’80s, are exactly what they sound like — a large outdoor screen visible from the comfort of your own car, using a radio frequency or external speaker to hear the audio. Now they’re being resurrected as a way to have an in-person viewing experience while adhering to social-distancing guidelines.
A Watertown native, Peterson is a current student at the University of South Dakota. He is working with FunFlicks, a company that specializes in providing outdoor movie experiences. Each night FunFlicks will set-up an inflatable 26 foot by 20 foot movie screen and 4K digital projector.
Moviegoers will be able to text in food orders for delivery to their cars. See the Facebook events under Lake Lorraine Sioux Falls for more details about food options and prices, as well as arrival times.
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (PG-13) will be shown twice each night. It is a 2004 American comedy film directed by Adam McKay, produced by Judd Apatow, starring Will Ferrell, and written by McKay and Ferrell. The film is a tongue-in-cheek take on the culture of the 1970s, particularly the new Action News format. It portrays a San Diego TV station where Ferrell’s title character clashes with his new female counterpart.
