Learn more about Alzheimer's at The Longest Day event June 21

Bring your blanket or chair to the southwest side of Lake Lorraine from 4:30-9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, to partake the longest day of the year at The Longest Day event. Games, live music and giveaways are all part of this free, family-friendly event to learn more about Alzheimer’s, honor those who have battled the disease and celebrate those who are caretakers.

All activities will take place on the Lake Walk, with free parking at CarsForSale.com, Westlake Office Building and on the street.

The community is invited to come to Lake Lorraine and enjoy yard games like Corn Hole, Ladder Ball, Washer Toss, Kids Axe Throwing, Yard Candyland, Yard Checkers, Ring Toss — and more. Paddle board and kayak rentals are available through Flow & Paddle. There will also be trivia, multiple drawings and prizes. Luminary bags that honor loved ones will be available to decorate onsite and place along the Lake Walk. They will be lit at dusk. Luminaries can also be picked up at the weekly Lake Lorraine Farmers Market, held Thursdays from 4-7 p.m. Freewill donations will be accepted throughout The Longest Day event for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association.

The Longest Day is the day with the most light — the summer solstice. On June 21, the Alzheimer’s Association encourages people from across the world to fight the darkness of Alzheimer’s through an activity of their choice. And, June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month.

The Alzheimer’s Association South Dakota is the premier source of information and support for the more than 18,000 people living with Alzheimer’s in South Dakota, their families and caregivers. Worldwide, more than 50 million people are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia.

Luminaries

If you’re interested in decorating a luminary bag to honor a loved one, they can be picked up the day of the event and decorated on site. You can also pick up luminaries and decorate bags at the weekly Lake Lorraine Farmers Market. There is no charge for the bags or any of the activities that are part of The Longest Day event. Freewill donations will be accepted throughout the event with aa suggested donation of $5 per bag.
