2019: A Year in Review

It’s been a busy year at the Lake Lorraine development. Judging from our #BestNine Instagram photos, people were really excited about the Dave & Buster’s announcement and opening of Sakura Sushi.
With the big announcements and activity at the lake in 2019, the stage is set for 2020 to be another exciting year. Here’s a look back at some of the notable moments:
JANUARY
VanBuskirk Companies, the development partners with the Friessen family, held an open house and Sioux Falls Area Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting at the newest retail building at Lake Lorraine. The new multi-tenant retail building is located on the east side of the lake, just south of Hobby Lobby.
Moe’s Home Collection was the first tenant to move into the new building, moving from the west side of the development.
APRIL
Dirt work started on Hyatt Place on the north end of the lake. This will be the first Hyatt in South Dakota and the first hotel to open at Lake Lorraine. It’s slated for a summer 2020 opening and is located right on the water.
MAY
The annual Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire Spring Parade of Homes featured The Shores on Lake Lorraine as well as other properties that incorporated products from Moe’s Home Collection and Pahl’s Designer Showrooms.
Work began on the newest building that’s part of The Shores on Lake Lorraine, premier townhomes located on the southwest side of Lake Lorraine.
The SandBar & Grill’s outdoor patio features beautiful views of the lake, and was home to live music every Wednesday and Thursday through Labor Day.
The Lake Lorraine fountain returned in 2019, featuring a new lighting feature. Additional seating and garbage was added to the west side of the Lake Walk.
JUNE
The city’s first west side Farmers Market launched at Lake Lorraine in late June. Held weekly on Thursdays from 4-7 p.m., the market grew to 10 vendors offering fresh produce, meat, Pampered Chef products, coffee, honey and soap products. The developers created the market to add to the farmers market community in Sioux Falls and provide a service for west side residents and Lake Lorraine shoppers and employees. Plans are underway for a 2020 return of the market.
A Perfect 10 Nail & Beauty Bar opened its third location in Sioux Falls, becoming the second tenant in the new retail building on the east side of the lake. The salon features manicures and pedicures, as well as body sugaring and waxing. It’s located on the east side of Lake Lorraine.
JULY
Developers made the official announcement that Dave & Buster’s would be coming to Sioux Falls in 2020. Dave & Buster’s is a sports bar, restaurant and arcade that has been frequently mentioned as a sought-after brand to bring to Sioux Falls. At 19,000 square feet, the standalone building is one of the smaller Dave & Buster’s concepts and will be the first Dave & Buster’s in South Dakota. It will be located on the east side of the lake, near the new retail building and Total Card, Inc. It’s slated to open in mid-2020.
Crazy Days at Lake Lorraine took place in mid-July, with many retailers offering great shopping deals.
SEPTEMBER
The second Lake Lorraine Job Fair was held at Grand Living at Lake Lorraine. Featuring Lake Lorraine employers, the Job Fair connected potential employees with diverse employment opportunities at Lake Lorraine.
Pahl’s Designer Showrooms, Moe’s Home Collection and The Shores on Lake Lorraine all participated in the Home Builders Association of the Sioux Empire Fall Parade of Homes.
Apricot Lane Boutique opened, becoming the third women’s boutique to be located at Lake Lorraine. The franchise carries clothing from the LA Fashion District and designer brand names, but each boutique is unique to the owner’s buying choices. It’s located in the new eastside retail building.
OCTOBER
Halloween at Lake Lorraine took place for the second year, inviting the community to come out and trick or treat at businesses around the development. Activities included a Costume Contest at Grand Living at Lake Lorraine, photo opportunities with characters, fun Halloween games to win prizes and pumpkins, as well as visits from the Sioux Falls Fire Department and the Avera Careflight helicopter. A beautiful fall day brought thousands out to the development.
CheeseCakez & More opened in late October, sharing a space with Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery on Marion Road. More sweet treat offerings in one location now include cheesecake, cheesecake dips, cheesecake minis and more.The final Lake Lorraine Farmers Market was held in late October. It was held in a blocked off parking lot near 32nd Street and Marion Road.
NOVEMBER
Child’s Play Toys opened its second Sioux Falls location at Lake Lorraine. A successful decade at their downtown location and the announcement that Dave & Buster’s was coming to Lake Lorraine helped the expansion. The unique toy store carries toys, books and more.
Work started on Dave & Buster’s, which is visible from Interstate 29.
Women’s boutique Love Marlow celebrated their one-year anniversary in business. The boutique specializes in sizes 12-28, with a goal of helping women feel confident and beautiful in their own skin every day.
DECEMBER
Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop celebrated their one-year anniversary on the west side of the development at 32nd Street and Marion Road. This is the franchise’s first South Dakota location and features “fanatically delicious” sandwiches.
Sakura Sushi opened in the former Topper’s Pizza space on Marion Road. This is the city’s first west side sushi restaurant. The menu features sushi and sashimi, tempura, hibachi and ramen. It is open seven days a week and has a beer and wine license.
